ARTIST  STATEMENT

“I worked for Amtrak for over 20 years. I would go in prior to work with my sketch pad and drawing tools to draw various railroad equipment and scenes from the railroad. The rail yard in the Albany/Rensselaer station was a primary source for material for my sketches and paintings. “

The work introduces the viewer to the railroad infrastructure. The focus is on objects, without any railroad workers present. “Hudson Crane,” is no longer in use; there are only the ghosts of workers past. “Roadrailer Couplets” and “Signal,” the objects are awaiting human involvement. Because the figures who currently, or once occupied these scenes are absent, our eye is drawn to the tools—and so, a human figure, which would have been a  worker is supplanted by the viewer.
