Known as one of the female artists who pioneered the 1970s architectural sculpture movement in an art scene dominated by men, award-winning Hudson Valley-based artist Donna Dennis’ work is not pure architecture or sculpture but the seen and the unseen – her bold installations of scaled down structures like subway entrances and tourist cabins serving as literal and intuitive portals to a metaphorical journey through life.
Houses and the Night Sky: The Art of Donna Dennis features paintings and sculpture that represent the artist’s response to a new life in the rural environment of the Hudson Valley as well as relevant earlier pieces that explicate her journey on the way here.
Donna Dennis has had solo exhibitions at The Brooklyn Museum, the Neuberger Museum, the Sculpture Center, and Holly Solomon Gallery, among others. Her work has also appeared in group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial, the Walker Art Center, MOMA P.S.1, the Tate Gallery, and ICA London, and included in permanent collections at the Brooklyn Museum, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Microsoft Collection, the Walker Art Center, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Neuberger Museum, among others.
