The artist Bob Braine lives and works in a swiftly changing ecological landscape. In a wide variety of media – including infrared photography, temporary tattoos, drone capture, sculptural assemblage, drawing, and archival presentation – Braine captures both the ever-changing peculiarities and the grim realities of our shared habitation. His solo show at Basilica Hudson pulls from various aspects of his ongoing work to present a realistic-yet-hopeful, hyper-local view of natural world upheaval – can microplastics and forever chemicals appear beautiful in a lens?
Braine – whose work you may have seen at Socrates Sculpture Park or during MoMA PS1’s “Greater New York” – is also uniquely suited to show at Basilica. For years he has been central to both the daily work and the ongoing renovations of the 110 South Front buildings and is more intimately familiar with the campus and its surrounding estuary environs than perhaps anyone else. The newly renovated Back Gallery is indeed a beautiful space – made so by the artist whose work is next featured.
