The Unusual Trial of Bernard v. Gaul

In the summer of 1835, a scandalous trial dominated the headlines of the New York Herald, a fledgling paper whose owner and editor, James Gordon Bennett, Sr. had a penchant for stories of scandal and murder, besides the usual coverage of politics and business. Historian Benjamin Feldman, in conjunction with the Columbia County Historical Society, will present on unusual breach of promise case brought by a prominent single man, George Barnard, a Hudson resident, against Mary H. Power Gaul, born and raised in Hudson also. The sordid trail, which took place in New York City, dominate the Herald’s columns for days…..
