Write That Story Writing Workshop

Tuesdays, July 11, 18, & 25

3pm

Limited to 10 participants. Registration required. Register by emailing director@roejanlibrary.org.

The three-session workshop will introduce participants to writing a short story or memoir. Stories, whether memoir or fiction, often begin with a life or real-world event that fascinates and inspires the storyteller in us all to write. The participants will engage their creative writing muscles in four sessions through close readings of fiction and memoir, in-class, and weekly assignments from writing prompts that use prose, visual imagery, poetry, and science to inspire stories.

Through immersion in inventive storytelling the stories will begin with a propelling event that incites action and move through to a surprising resolution. Empathy and the mysteries of emotions, details of the senses, and cause and effect will focus the writing. As we explore the internal and external conflicts in our lives and the world through writing, the depth of experience and the world of a storyteller will emerge. In four sessions, the participants will have a draft of a short story or the first pages of a memoir.
