between the lines

a party to remember

between the lines, held on May 16, 2015 was a party to remember at the Catskill Mill on Main Street in Catskill, NY. The fantastically well-attended event was bustling with dance and art devotees from all over the Hudson Valley. The evening opened with appetizers donated by the Catskill Mill Food Truck, under the attention of Chef Letty Andrade, who provided delicious fare in artful arrangements. Drinks were served by Doubles II Dance Club. Guests mingled in the store front room of the Catskill Mill, enjoying the live auction artwork and the elegant simplicity of the human-scale Attendees share their excitement_low res_between the lines_partymangrove lamps, which are produced by artisans at the Mill.

When GCCA reported the high number of advance ticket sales to Nancey Rosensweig, Member on the Board of Directors and who conceived and directed the event, she and the dancers decided to put on two performances in a row, rather than one single performance. The actual attendance (over 200 people) at the event far exceeded expectations and the dancers all agreed to put on THREE performances as it became clear that two would not allow everyone to enjoy their creation.

The event ended in a crescendo of movement_low res_between the lines_party

Guests took turns as audience members in the theatre watching the performance inspired byKiki Smith’s original sketches of bodies in motion. Large-scale prints of Smith’s sketches adorned the walls around the theatre. Dancers Jean Churchill, Peggy Gould, Sondra Loring, Judith Moss, Donald Mouton, Nancey Rosensweig, Maria Simpson and Todd Whitley alternated in sweeping articulated movements throughout the space, using a collection of air mattresses and futons as stages, hiding spots, and places to rest. Collaborators Michael Moss and Billy Stein performed live music from a corner of the room, punctuating the movement with sensuous and haunting notes. The performance ended in a building crescendo of music and motion as a central dancer called out numbers of positions as the dancers bent and twisted on the floor in unison to match her directives.

The Live Auction was introduced by the Village of Catskill President, Vincent Seeley, who lauded the The auction preview stirred up a lot of conversation_low res_between the lines_partycollaboration between these local artists, dancers and businesses who came together to support a fellow organization that in turn will be able to help support the arts community. Village Trustee, Jim Chewens, led the GCCA Live Auction for the second year in a row, encouraging friendly bidding and playfully threatening the crowd with parking tickets. Several pieces went into bidding wars, helping to raise nearly $3,000 for GCCA. Artwork made available for bidding was generously donated by artistsSarah Barker, Dina Bursztyn, Julie Chase, Marieken Cochius, Tasha Depp, Enrique “Kico” Govantes, Iris Kaplan, Polly Law, Joan Blazis Levitt, Stanley Maltzman, Claudia McNulty, D. Jack Solomon, Marilee Souisie, Molly Stinchfield, Draga Šušanj, Rob van Erve, Pamela W. Wallace and Wendy Ide Williams.

Super DJ Super Boom Trevor Babb_low res_between the lines_partyThe finale of the event featured a dance party spun by Catskill Mill’s own DJ SuperBoom, who led a dedicated group of dancers late into the night with retro 70s funk, and 80s & 90s beats.

Dancers Responding to AIDS, producers of The Hudson Valley Dance Festival, donated two tickets to the third annual Hudson Valley Dance Festival to be held on October 10, 2015 at Catskill Historic Point.  GCCA Intern Valerie Ohm drew the name of between the lines attendee and lucky winner-Lisa Fox Martin!
