ARTIST STATEMENT
These three pieces were carefully selected from my work — each of them shows a different winter scene from above, and in each of them it is not immediately clear to the viewer what that scene is. A snow-covered field, a snow-covered frozen pond, and a frozen pond after the snow melted; each of these images are scenes we are all used to seeing, but when viewed from above, they become very abstract. It is hard to immediately understand the sense of scale from these aerial images, and I think that is what makes them so interesting. When something is viewed in the abstract, the mind immediately looks for patterns and attributes these to what it knows — a frozen pond from hundreds of feet in the air might look like something else entirely to each person that views it.
